The UP Journalism Club successfully held a Harry Potter quiz bee last September 2 at the College of Mass Communication Auditorium.

Dubbed as “Pottermost”—after “Pottermore,” a website recently launched by J.K. Rowling and Sony which features games and new content about the Harry Potter books—the quiz bee was participated by some seventeen teams from different colleges and even from other schools in Metro Manila.

The members of the ad hoc committee consisted of UPJC members who are all “Potterheads” or Harry Potter fans, and have, themselves, joined Harry Potter quiz bees in the past. The preparations took almost a month, with the members devoting an entire weekend in formulating the questions alone.

Unlike most quiz bees, Pottermost featured twists in the scoring system, with special questions giving the participants special “powers” they can use to their advantage. A “Slytherin” question allows a team from barring another team from answering a question, while a “Ravenclaw” question gives a team a chance to answer a bonus item at the end of a round.

One Edlen Sanchez congratulated the organizers for the fun yet orderly way the quiz bee had been conducted. “GJ (good job) to the organizers! Ang smart nung book scan, challenging questions,” she posted in the quiz bee’s official Facebook page.

Redd Panes, head of the ad hoc team, feels very elated that the participants loved the quiz bee. He says that all the efforts of the team paid off.

The winners were awarded 3,000, 2,000, and 1,000 pesos.

The quiz bee was hosted by Alex Austria and Ralph Ty, who delighted the participants by dressing up as Cho Chang and Lord Voldemort respectively.
