Last December 8, the University of the Philippines Journalism Club (UPJC) held an educational discussion (ED) session on advocacy journalism. Titled ““Objectivity” Versus Advocacy in Journalism”, the ED tackled the case of Marjohara Tucay’s protest at a talk at the National Museum of Manila which guested US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Different sides were aired out by the members of the organization, both in favor and in disagreement of Tucay’s actions. The integrity of both the follow-up interview of Tucay by GMA News Online Editor Howie Severino and the Clinton talk itself were also brought into question by the members.

Every member was encouraged to speak his or her mind on the issue. The ED’s aim was not to foster animosity between members, but to present the different sides on an issue and integrate the discussed views in the pursuit of journalism values.

While UPJC is a journalism organization, its integrity as an academic club clearly holds in its sessions focused on critical thinking, such as the ED that was held.

Educational discussions are a regular part of the organization’s activities.
