CAMPUS JOURNALISM WORKSHOP (CJW)

These kids were having fun while drafting their feature articles.
More than a decade ago, the UP Journalism Club (UPJC) thought of furthering its thrust of critical thought and action in journalism by starting with young high school students. We realized that students need to learn early the basics of journalism, as well as the ethics and laws governing the profession. These would help them as campus journalists and clear the path for those who are interested in pursuing the profession.
In September 1995, we approached different high schools with this idea. Fortunately, the San Jose Academy granted UPJC’s proposal to conduct a seminar-workshop for the students.
The workshop ran for two consecutive Saturdays, November 18 and 25. More than 40 students from first to fourth year participated in the workshop. Subjects taught were news writing, feature writing, opinion/editorial writing, laying-out, copyediting, as well as a discussion on media ethics.
Following this success, UPJC organized another workshop, in October 1996, this time outside Metro Manila. This was at Hope Christian High School in Naga City.
The organization saw the interest and eagerness of the students, the fulfillment of receiving writing awards and the happiness of sharing knowledge; so it was decided to continue what it had began.
For three years, after a simple idea spurred a series of successful workshops, UPJC felt it had to revise its workshop curriculum. This was done in October 1998 when the workshop was held in Marinduque.
UPJC has so far toured Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, Laguna, Quezon, Batangas and Camarines Sur. Lately, it has also been campaigning around Metro Manila Schools, including St. Paul College – Parañaque, St. Paul College – Quezon City, St. Theresa’s College, Miriam High School, Colegio de Santa Rosa – Intramuros, Olivarez College, and Holy Family School – Quezon City.
